Concept: Blue Skies Falling Blog Infiltrated.

Posted by connor on May 20, 2009

On May 15, 2009 my personal website (connorcoyne.com) was infected by a malware program associated with Martuz .cn that inserted scripts into dynamic and static files at over 1500 distinct sites. The bug is discussed at http://blog.unmaskparasites.com/2009/05/18/martuz-cn-is-a-new-incarnation-of-gumblar-exploit/. Evidently the infection isn’t the result of any specific action on my part. I was setting up a book review blog through WordPress (using the toughest password I’ve ever come up with) and this was what the program targeted. The infection caused Google to blacklist my site for viewers’ protection, and when Twitter picked up on the Google listing, it suspended my account. So far Facebook has not responded, but to say this is a major headache would be an understatement.

Sam from Forge 22 (http://forge22.com) has helped me with these problems — he’s a great guy and a great designer, and you should throw him some business if you can.

Bottom Line: connorcoyne.com, connorcoyne.com/blog, and associated sites are safe to visit, but Google has not lifted their warning yet, and I don’t know what the timetable on that will be. Until it’s lifted, however, there isn’t any reason to visit. The damage was extensive and will take time to repair. In the meantime, I suggest you check back from time to time, and I will post an announcement as soon as things are a little bit more normal around here.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

~ Connor

Concept: Here I Go, Playing Star Again.

Posted by connor on March 10, 2009

In the worst of St. Seger.

So. The blog is live again, no thanks to my old server Simple Host, who 1) lost a large number of files one two occasions, only attempted to restore them on one and even then threatened to charge me a $50 penalty for their trouble (nevermind that I was paying roughly 50% higher than what I’m paying now), and 2) failed to update my account information after two attempts, meaning that my domain registration expired. This is how I lost hereisnowhy.

As for my new server, Bluehost, it’s early in the relationship and they just got my money. However, they’ve already presided over a difficult and time-consuming content transfer, helped me change domain names, and have been professional and efficient throughout the process. A good sign of things to come.

Hereisnowhy.com was not a great domain name to begin with. People didn’t know if it was “here” or “hear,” “no” or “know,” “why” or “y.” It wasn’t clear what it stood for. My wife suggested urbantasm.com as an enticing alternative… and I thought about it seriously… but I ultimately went with the ever practical connorcoyne.com. I figure that if I can keep the content of the website interesting, it doesn’t matter how boring the url is.

It would be nice if I found a way for this website to cover its own expenses, which is currently about twenty-five cents a day. I’m planning on starting up a parallel blog which will maintain book reviews (some of which I’ve already written) and feature ads. It will be updated as needed, but since it’s supposed to earn a quarter a day, I don’t intend to sink a lot of time into it. When I have this up and running, I will let you know.

In the meantime, there is another route to a self-sustaining site, and one which is ultimately more important because it also applies to my career as a writer. I need to effectively use this site to promote my writing (specifically my novels and fiction) and as a way to obtain writing commissions. I’m not a freelance writer per se, and this is a very particular niche I’m filling: Talented Literary Experimentalist and Opinionated Guy.

With this in mind, I humbly request any Friends / Advocates to update / add links to connorcoyne.com, and to just generally share the blog and website with anyone you might think is interested. The same goes for individual posts of interest, etc.

And of course, your comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Concept: Welcome to my Street Fair!

Posted by connor on February 23, 2009

A Street Fair

I’ve eliminated the distinction between “frequently” and “infrequently” updated friends, and I’ve added some links for friends who’ve been blogging for awhile now. A lot of these sites are really cool, and you should check them out. So imagine this: you’re walking down a grassy unpaved street amidst big old brick buldings on a warm sunny day in Blue-Skies-Fallingville. You turn a corner and wham! You’re in the midst of a street fair. Ideas are on sale here; art and politics and anecdote and adventure. Where do you turn? You wander from kiosk to kiosk. Here’s what you find:

Black Maze Books is a small press publisher specializing in raunchy poetry, but previewing mysterious and grandiose works for the future. It is just adjacent to Bud to Blossom, which is a sort of pseudo-ambassadorship to Australia with delicious scent of fresh-baked good food floating through the air. EGAD is populated with all sorts of political progressives, astrophysicists, Minnesotans, Israelis. It’s a mess of telescopes and charts.

One finds EGAD to be hauntingly similar to Elisabeth Blair and her sister sites. They both have telescopes. Now this is a big table with lots of goodies; music and art and history. It’s fronted by an equally artistic but more politically driven Dazzling Surprises, heir apparent to the Third Rail Themes. These tables feature an eloquent and compelling lecture series, currently driven by observations of Ghana.

(f)lawless occasionally stops by the other tables to steal their food, or maybe to egg Black Maze Books. Forge 22 Web Design tries to look all sleek and professional, but is inclined to steal food as well.

Two masked carnivalers serve up jambalaya at From the City of Big Shoulders to the Big Easy, under the watchful gaze of a couple of fierce kittens. This dynamic is whimsically documented by the diligent writers at Gnash Nosh. And Gyda’s Song is generally quiet, but selling some stunning antique thoughts. Helen’s Cafeteria of Stray Thoughts is populated by a staff of Slovakians with predilections for Harry Potter and Star Wars, and the adjacent John D. Martin table discusses these things from the Egyptian-American perspective.

The Layabouting kiosk may seem the most laid-back of the whole bunch, but they’re extraordinarily talkative. If you approach this table, don’t expect to leave in less than a half-hour, or without learning twenty new things you never thought of before.

The Leila Texts features a consortium of awesome text-messaging Leilas (but almost all of them are imposters!) which is necely set off by the steady stream of Italo blasting out from the Middle Branch Productions table. Such grooves are carved into bias-smashing arguments and dance over at The New PolyAnna.

Oh fragious day, calous, calay!, Once Bitten, Twice Registered, Unieuph, and Virtually Cleistogamic all have a decayed, unattended air to them. The cypress moss hangs heavy here. Most of these are adorned and stacked-high with relics of scavenger hunts past and gone. The same could be said for Small Shelly Fauna, with, of course, the addition of the skeletons of extinct denizens of the Permian Period.

The Patience Family is chilling out, patiently, which is to say a la San Francisco. The Pork Chop Express farms out behind their kiosk, trying to speak in halting Italian.

Smallhouse Log is one of the strangest looking tables: An admixture of religious imagery and dada-like art. Don’t confuse it with the throne of The Wolf Baron, where you can get three opinions for the price of one.

All of the goods here are technically free. You can buy them for the price of time.

Can anyone guess to what each picture corresponds this month?

The links behind the doorways may offer a clue or two; anyway, I hope you check them out. Some of the most enjoyable stories I’ve experienced…

Concept: A Break, and January.

Posted by connor on December 22, 2008

I will post tomorrow, but I’m going to be visiting family off-and-on for the next two weeks, and don’t expect much of a chance to post.

I will start posting regularly again as of Monday, January 5th, but January is a very busy month at work, so things will still be a little sparce here through the beginning of February.

I don’t expect any delays in QOTDs, however.
