Medieval/Renaissance Gothic at the Vanderbilts’

Luxist is, appropriately, reporting on the Vanderbilts.  Their mansion in Newport, Rhode Island was built for eleven million dollars in 1892, and was the most expensive house in the U.S. at the time.  The house has recently reacquired (on a temporary basis) a whole gallery of medieval and renaissance Gothic works that were sold to John Ringling (famous for his Ringling Brothers circus).  You can read the article — which includes some nice photographs — to learn a little bit more about how art changes hands in the world (and tends to concentrate among wealthy collectors and fantabulously massive museums).  If you live in New England, maybe you can go and check out the Gothic Room for yourself.
